A complete LGBTQ+ travel guide and event schedule from Travel in Pride β¦ OutAtlas Β· Last updated October 4, 2026
Pride Amsterdam has grown from a small summer event in 1996 into one of the largest Pride celebrations on the planet. The 31st edition returns to Amsterdam's regular annual scale in 2027, with an expected 400,000+ attendees celebrating the legendary Canal Parade, Pride Walk, street parties, and citywide LGBTQ+ events across a full week.
The festival builds from Dam Square through the city centre and peaks with the iconic Canal Parade on the Amstel and Prinsengracht β all free to attend from public canal banks and streets.
Dating back to 1996, Pride Amsterdam is one of the world's oldest LGBTQ+ pride celebrations.
Typically 80+ decorated boats sailing the Prinsengracht with crowds lining the full route on August 7.
One of Europe's most-attended Pride celebrations, without the WorldPride-level crowds of 2026.
The Pride Walk, Street Parties, and Canal Parade are all free to attend from public access points.
β οΈ Note: As of October 2026, Pride Amsterdam had not yet released its full 2027 programme. Check pride.amsterdam in spring 2027 for confirmed dates and times.
Pride Amsterdam traditionally opens with the Pride Walk from Dam Square to Pride Park at Vondelpark, culminating in a free outdoor community festival that kicks off the festival week.
City centre street parties typically roll out across multiple venues in the days leading into the Canal Parade, serving as the traditional kickoff to Pride Amsterdam's biggest weekend.
The highlight of every Pride Amsterdam: approximately 80 decorated boats sail from the Oosterdok along the Nieuwe Herengracht, Amstel, and Prinsengracht, with crowds lining the canal banks the full length of the route. Free to watch from public banks β arrive early for a good spot.
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) is one of Europe's best-connected hubs. Late July/early August is peak summer travel season β book ahead of the July 31βAugust 8 window for the best availability.

Short answer: Yes, Amsterdam is safe for LGBTQ+ travelers. The Netherlands has some of the strongest LGBTQ+ legal protections in the world, and Amsterdam is exceptionally welcoming β especially during Pride week.
Fully legal nationwide β the Netherlands became the first country in the world to open civil marriage to same-sex couples in 2001. Same-sex couples may also adopt under federal Netherlands law.
Protected since 1993 β the Equal Rights Act bans discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing, and public accommodations. As of July 2025, the Netherlands also added dedicated legal protection from hate crimes based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Legal to change your legal gender (requires a medical diagnosis, no surgery required), and gender-affirming care is legal and accessible nationwide.
Dutch police actively coordinate security for Pride Amsterdam's events, including the Canal Parade. Watch belongings in the dense Canal Parade crowds, agree on a meeting point with your group, and keep your phone charged. Standard big-city awareness applies, particularly outside well-patrolled Pride event zones late at night.
